Churchill hated the media and was lucky not to have had to face the debacle of modern politics. You get what you deserve I suspect and America has only deserved eight years of poor leadership. The three contenders also are nothing to write home about. Then again I am convinced that even stoic Churchill would have baulked from this inquisition of a media hanging, drawing and quartering we witness these days. It is awful. Just the attitude of subjecting the contenders to this is likely to get certain traits from them. They have to comply to what ´badge´ they always wear on their lapel. They have to comply or else, to having their right arm across their chest at all patriotic occasions. Do you realize that ´phony´ comes to mind to be in compliance? Why not go the whole hog and introduce the ´clicking of heels´ to top it all off? Obama is quite right in trying to establish that patriotism goes a lot further and longer than having to wear the uniform of patriotism. How patriotic is it for example to bring your nation to the level of disrespect that exists today from the position of world sympathy and empathy that existed right after 9/11? Who did that?
I am amazed at this great nation allowing a biased hate mongering talk radio station to stir up the population much like a Tokyo Rose and it go on unhindered. Hannity goes on and on in depicting these fine people who clearly are the chosen ones of the nation for the election in November to be castigated in such fashion. Did he do the same in scrutinizing the Presidents past before Mr. Bush was elected? I doubt it. I wonder if we will have, once more, the same people who in the past have done sour deeds against the blacks rise up against a black leader and will America have to wait for a few more decades and a few more black voters to turn the tide and to claim victory over bigotry. The fear of black leadership is being formulated by talk radio as a ploy and it might work just as it did in rising up against driving licenses for poor families who are trapped here and undocumented. There are kids here who are suffering from the denial of the right to drive and that can be like losing a limb in some parts of America. You will never hear from those same radio hosts about the money it costs to be in occupation of a sovereign nation against the will of the world. You will never hear it spoken by those stations that were the US to occupy for one hundred years you will not get the people to accept that without angst and maybe the world will NOT standby and see America flatten all the opposition just because they can and just for oil. I sometimes even wonder as I listen to the diatribe of Hannity if some Americans would actually be OK with a bomb to wipe out Palestine just because biblically Israel can do not wrong. Gunships against taxis do not offend many Americans and F16´s against strollers in dust bowl town does not either. America needs a squeaky clean leader for a while who has a mind like the Popes recent talks recommend. Diplomacy and fairness and sharing of resources amongst the nations. Not the ´might is right´ attitudes that have prevailed since 9/11. America needs to embrace the world instead of defiantly distancing the world. The UN has a place and does a good job that all other nations recognize. Just having the UN in the USA should not go to the heads of so many. There are many places in the world that rely on the UN supporting skills.
There are peoples anxiously watching around the world to see the result of this election. It is not because they love America that they wait with baited breath in Bangladesh but because they know that their fate might depend on who is elected and they hope for change almost as much as do the bulk of America.
