The Taxi Driver - The Wisdom I was going back home after finishing my work; I was very busy organizing an international workshop, so I hired a taxi to reach home. The driver was chatty and he was saying things about Pakistan and as a developing country there are lots of things which required improvements. As I was tired I just replied in yes and no, but not for long time, as it changed quickly when he saw a police sergeant and said that we must change things. How can a country live or develop if there is no justice - he got my full attention. He said that judges, police, army & politicians are enjoying all facilities and they are doing nothing for the betterment of common people. He said that if our government had tried to change one thing in every year, most of the problems would have been over by now. The judiciary & police must be fair and solve the problems quickly, as common people have to deal with them so many times. I listened to him as I felt his grievances, he was desperate to see his country doing well and all people could enjoy a good life. At the end of our journey he even said that he won’t take fare, as I appreciated his ideas. I thought that if a person who is driving a taxi and not so much literate can think about big and basic things for changing his country, how can it be possible that people sitting at top places and have power to do things, can’t recognize the problems and their answers, when they have education, knowledge and vast experience. I just got my answer, “Yes they know each and every thing,” then why are things still the same. It is because they just don’t want to change them. For gaining few advantages (may be personal), they close their eyes to see truth. It’s not only a problem of a single developing country but of the whole world. It would be a bad situation if we have a problem but we don’t know about it or about it’s solution, but the worst and unfortunate scenario is that we know a problem and know how to finish or solve it, but don’t want to do that. If we see the whole world, I think many would agree that there are problems which can be solved and most of us know how they could be solved, but in fact, the persons who have influence, power, and are in the position to work them out don’t bother to work for some reasons of their own. But how can this be changed as most of us believe that realization of things is very necessary. If we realize something then we will act, but in this case realization or knowing is there but still, things are not changing. What is the main reason that things are not changing? Yes there is one thing above all, and that is called honesty. There are many ways to do or finish things, but if honesty is there, then it will be done in the best possible way. It is honesty which also prevents from unfair behavior and makes the mind clear and fair towards any job or situation. So as an old saying (one can understand how worthy it is), “HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY,” and it is required for the betterment of any country and in large of the whole world.
