The Decider

“I hear the voices, and I read the front page, and I know the speculation. But I'm the decider, and I decide what is best.” These are the words of President Bush when he defended Mr. Donald H. Rumsfeld, the Defense Secretary of United States because He believes that Mr. Rumsfeld is the best person for the job so no one should argue about it and there is no need of his resignation.  Mr. Rumsfeld has also said that there is only a small number of people against him but the rest are supporting and acknowledging his abilities, so he must continue working.  But does it make any difference that how many supporting or opposing because Mr. President is the decider and he will do it by his mind only. It can also be taken in this way that perhaps everyone supporting you and no one against you but if Mr. President thinks you are not doing well, you have to go because he is the decider. If someone believes that his decisions are the best, does he need any kind of advice or does he care to listen to others?

USA often criticizes other nations for not having democratic values and promoting democracies around the world is its fundamental policy, but what is democracy?  If someone like Mr. Bush, the President of United States, says that he decides all the things, then what is the difference between him and a dictator who is ruling a country with force; after all he makes decisions by himself.  It is true that in the USA freedom of expression is a basic right of anyone and Mr. Bush does appear in press conferences and answer to some stinging questions.  He also has the services of some able advisors which may not be in a case of any dictator. But the primary and most important is the decision making for country and if US President decides things by his own mind so the same is done by a dictator.

The United States is the most powerful country in the world, so any decision affects the whole world. The situation of Iran’s nuclear standoff is at crucial point. All the nations in the world want a peaceful solution to this situation. But Mr. Bush has never ruled out military option against Iran’s nuclear facilities.  He said recently “But now that I'm on Iran, the threat to Iran, of course the threat from Iran is, of course, their stated objective to destroy our strong ally Israel. That's a threat, a serious threat. It's a threat to world peace; it's a threat, in essence, to a strong alliance. I made it clear, I'll make it clear again, that we will use military might …” Still many US officials are saying that attacking Iran is not in the agenda but if the decider (Mr. Bush) has made a decision to attack, will anyone be able to stop him? He is claiming that he can think the best and if he believes that military solution is the best option; will he listen to others or change his mind?

But Mr. Bush must be aware that there is “time” - the ultimate decider - which will judge his every decision. With this kind of statement it is also clear that he will be held fully responsible for any thing that happens after his decisions.  And President George W. Bush must also not forget that once Mr. Saddam Hussein was a decider and a few years ago he made some poor decisions by his own, now his situation is in front of the whole world. Soon the time will tell us the outcomes of Mr. Bush’s decisions and he will know how people remember him - with good words or bad.
