Iraq - The Real Problems
According to the Iraqi government, more than 4,000
civilians were killed in insurgency related violence in 2005. After the
bombing of Askari Mosque (also know as Golden Mosque) in Samarra which
is one of the holiest shrines of Shiite Islam, tension between Shiites
and Sunnis reached new levels. In the first two months of this year,
already more than 2000 civilians have been killed. These poor civilians
are not killed by any mistakes - they are main targets. Sunni religious
extremists kill Shiites as they consider them the collaborators with
Americans and Shiites killing Sunnis as they consider them enemies of
their lives. Both communities have formed death squads to kill each
other. If Sunnis have insurgency, then Shiites have armed militias. The first bad step was taken by the USA and the Iraqi government to include only Shiite and Kurdish in Iraq’s national army and police, ignoring the Sunnis. Sunnis feel it as a threat against them and are more likely to fight back. It is an important matter for all communities in Iraq and Sunnis to have representation in Iraqi forces to get assurance that forces are not formulated to harm anyone, but to protect citizens. The other problem is that the Shiites continue to insist that elected Sunnis parliamentarians are also terrorists because they are with insurgents. Iraqi leadership is trying to form a united government but in a situation like this, can they form a united government? The lack of trust on each other is also playing a huge role in making things even worse. The other and most important thing is the “power vacuum”. Saddam Hussein was a powerful leader and ruled Iraq from 1979 till 2003. When suddenly his rule was over, there was no one to take control of the Iraqi government. Even after 3 years of United States led invasion on Iraq, there is no one capable to take control of things. Every nation needs a leader and in this situation Iraq is in need of a very strong leader with strong character and desire to change the country. How can Iraq prevent civil war if its leaders are predicting it? And the first person to give that statement was none other than Mr. Jalal Talabani, the President of Iraq. I just can’t understand how a president of a country could say that we are going for civil war. What is he doing? What are the responsibilities of a president and the government? Iraqi civilians have no power to end this bloody violence and are crying for peace and stability, but why do government leaders that have the power to change things only predicts things? They are also not helping their citizens by only criticizing insurgency or militias. The people running Iraq are liable to make things good for all Iraqis. Unfortunately till now there is no leadership in Iraq to make solid decisions for any improvement. In fact there is no proper government in Iraq. On December 16th, 2005 Iraqis from all communities showed a keen interest in changing the fate of their country when they voted in huge numbers to elect a new Parliament. That moment was called historical and start of a new era for Iraq, but what happened since then will surely make all Iraqis disappointed as till now the Parliament never met to discuss any issues or make any kind of government. Things will change in Iraq when it is ruled by a powerful leader who can rule with justice and equality, and also have dreams for a great future. As Anatol France, a great French author and Nobel Prize winner has said, “To accomplish great things we must not only act but also dream, not only plan but also believe”. Iraq needs it badly. |
