Wrong Choice Being a writer, I know the importance of the right of freedom to express anything. But does freedom mean to say anything anyone wants? Then perhaps the bad guys should be free also to write books about how to do crimes, how to kill someone, or how to harm society. Will anyone accept this kind of freedom? Freedom to express anything does not mean to say anything, whether it is right or wrong. It has its limitations, boundaries, and there are few rules to express anything and it has to be done in a right manner. Everyone knows it. I am surely against this kind of freedom when something is wrongly linked with someone. Certainly it has been done in the case of Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon him). I have seen those caricatures and found them absolutely un-realistic. The persons who have made these cartoons have no information about the life of Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon him); it has been done by ignoring the clear facts. If they have ever studied the life of Prophet (Peace be upon him), I am sure they would have never thought to do this kind of thing. His life shows us what character/respect he had for humanity. His sayings tell us about his vision for all of us, I quote few words from his last Sermon: "All mankind is from Adam and Eve, and Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black, nor a black has any superiority over a white - except by piety and good action". These words were said some 1400 years ago. When he conquered Makkah, he forgave every person who gave him so many difficulties until he was forced to leave his birth place and migrate to Madina. Even his loved ones were killed there. Can a cruel person leave his enemies and forgive them all? He never killed anyone and he spread Islam with all kindness but not with any force. His life was nothing but preaching the message of love and kindness which is the message of Islam. I am not against the images. A few people are doing bad things and one has every right to criticize them. If these cartoons were against any other people, like Osama and his friends, perhaps very few people would have said it to be wrong, but not everyone. What we have now is everyone in the Muslim community criticizing it because they have chosen the wrong person for these expressions. I just try to give a simple example. If someone draws Mr. George W. Bush's image very bad than there would be reaction from few people and they will say that it is a wrong thing but still many would keep quiet because if few people are in favor of his decisions, many don’t agree with him also. But on other hand if someone draws a bad cartoon of Mr. Nelson Mandela or Mahatma Gandhi, can anyone guess the possible reaction? I am sure everyone will be against it as they are respected around the world for their struggle for peace and freedom. The point is clear and one must understand that freedom should be used to express, but not to demolish the image of someone. |
