Why Hamas Won Everyone is stunned by the Islamic hard line militant group Hamas victory in recent elections in Philistine territory. Many feared that Hamas was in strong position but never thought that they could possibly sweep the elections. Does it show that people like militant groups and they have voted for them because of their hard line stance against Israel? Well, I don’t think like that. I don’t believe people of any country like militant or extremist groups to come into power, it’s not in our nature to go for extremism. But if we see recent elections in Philistine, people gave their votes to extremists, so does it mean that I am wrong? But I still will not change my words and will say, people don’t like extremism at all. There are few things which make that happen. If we look into recent history, in Afghanistan Taliban took over the country in 1996 by force and impose few hard things on Afghanis. They tried to get their goals by pressing and forcing people. Their rule was over at the end of 2001 after US led war against them. Since then, if we see the recent polls, the majority of people don’t want them to come back and say things are much better now. The other thing that I can mention is that in the 2002 general elections in Pakistan, religious parties won considerable numbers of seats in Parliament which they never won in the history of the country. They even got the government of one province by complete majority and also got an important opposition leader’s seat in the National Assembly. Many believe that it was the reaction of people against the military ruler who supported US war on Afghanistan, but there was other reasons also as people thought perhaps this change will bring something good for them as in past nothing happened for their favor. But after coming into power they did nothing, things are the same and people saw no big change in their lives. The reaction against them came in last year’s local government elections where people rejected their nominees. If people only voted for them because of US policies, then I don’t think that religious parties would have lost in local elections since the US still has presence in Afghanistan and in Iraq. On other hand in Tribal areas of Pakistan, the Taliban is trying to achieve the same kind of influence as the Hamas have in Philistine. They killed bandits which were looting and killing people. These kinds of moves were welcomed by the commoners there. If the government is not protecting its citizens and there is no law, these people could get the sympathies of citizens by removing a few bad things. And in the case of Philistine, if we just summarize things, then it would be that Israel’s un-justified actions against common philistines created Hamas, and Fatah which was a long ruling party involved in corruption and also did nothing for the betterment of Philistines, so they let the Hamas win the election. These events clearly suggest that when people have no other choice they will go for any thing. The fault is not of people who choose these kinds of extremists but of the governments and the persons who have power but don’t think the miseries of commoners when they have sources and means to change their lives. So responsibility lies on every government to do things for the betterment of their citizens and if they keep doing that than no one will ever think about going towards extremism or any thing similar to that. It’s very simple that if someone does good things for us we appreciate it and if someone brings harm to us we are ready to fight. The message is loud and clear, now it is the time to think about to change few things in right directions than results will never stun anyone. |
