Iran's Nuclear Standoff

A nuclear free world is a dream of every living person in this world, but this dream is far from becoming any reality. Still knowing the fact that nuclear weapons can destroy us all, there is no shortage of these weapons to demolish the world many times.  Now Iran’s nuclear crises is in the headlines when it started atomic research again by breaking the seals at Nantaz atomic research facility. The action is considered as crossing the “Red Line”.

Officials of 6 Countries (USA, Russia, UK, France, Germany, and China) are meeting at London to discuss the way to tackle the issue and most importantly to reach on a common ground to push back Iran. USA and European countries want the referral of Iran to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions. It can be done if 35 countries that make up the decision-making board of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) decide that Iran should be referred to the Security Council.

What will happen if UN Security Council put tough sanctions on Iran? Certainly Iran will pull out from NPT making its nuclear program more hidden from the world and do whatever it wants. The situation now is not so bad that everything is out of control, IAEA still has the presence in Iran and can prevent the country from making a Atomic Bomb which is feared that it is willing to do so. But if there is no watchdog, the situation would be more complicated. Even with the presence of IAEA in Iran, there are ambiguities about Iran’s Nuclear Program; so what would be if there’s no one watching it? The other things that Sanctions against Iran will also affect the entire world, as it is the 4th largest oil exporting country and Iran is not afraid to play the “oil card” by saying it will raise oil prices. If Iran pulls out from the NPT and carries on with its nuclear program, is the USA in a position to wait and play the same waiting game as it did against Iraq to let the sanctions do its impact on Iran and make it so weak that eventually it could not stand against any action? But it will take many years as Iran’s economy is strong with over 30 billion US dollar reserves.   It is quite possible that USA or Israel will attack the nuclear facilities in Iran. Will it be the end? The situation is not that simple.

Iran shares more than 1400km of boundary line with Iraq where the USA has huge military presence but still has nothing in control there. The insurgency in Iraq is blamed that most Sunni Muslims are behind it and Majority Shia Muslim population is not very involved in it. But if any action is taken against Iran and as dominant Shia Muslim country with huge influence in Iraq, things would change very quickly and perhaps insurgency will not only remain from the Sunni community but  from the Shia community also. It will be the deadliest for the coalition in Iraq. The other things which will be done by Iran to cash the situation in its favor by direct interference in Iraq and if the population has sympathies for Iran, it would not be a very difficult task. The events could lead towards a complete war.

So it’s quite clear that the situation is not easy there, but one thing which can prevent from disaster is dialogue. Many times Iran admitted that dialogue, but not force, will solve the problem. If we look at the case of North Korea, the strategy of putting regional countries (Russia, China, Japan, South Korea) to put pressure on North Korea worked very well. The same may be applied for Iran also. Iran’s neighbors are not as powerful as North Korea’s neighbors are, but they are still gulf countries that do have some impact and influence on all things. Even the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) may be involved to defuse the tension.

The situation is bad now, let’s hope that world leaders will make a decision with wisdom and prevision to make things go from bad to good and they will not let the situation go from bad to worse. The whole world will be affected by any actions they take and time will tell us soon.
