DURYEA DAY
People from
all over came to see the shiny cars that were displayed at
Boyertown’s Duryea Day on September first. This was the forty
second annual event organized by the Boyertown Museum of
Historic Vehicles. Cars from all time periods were present and
their owners were proud to be there to show off their prized
possessions. Also at the event was a flea market aimed at
selling vintage-car related items. For daring drivers, a
teeter-board was set up and car owners competed in attempt to
balance their cars.
[SOT]
Duryea Day
honors all kinds of wheeled-memorabilia, and welcomed a
traveling bicycle museum. The owner took the unique cycles out
for a ride displaying each of their characteristics.
A highlight
video of the day along with some tours of the hot cars will be
available on our website at www dot wzartv dot com in the
upcoming weeks. Duryea Day is held every Labor Day weekend at
the Boyertown Park on Madison Street.
TRUCK, CAR,
& MOTORCYCLE SHOW
The
Boyertown Fire Department held the 4th annual Custom
Truck, Car, and Motorcycle show also at the Boyertown Park, of
course not on the same weekend. Owners displayed their vehicles
- many from Duryea Day were also present at this fundraiser.
Trophies were awarded in twenty one different classes to the
first and second place winner. The show was started in 2004 to
benefit the Boyertown Fire Department.
LINDSAY
SPENGLER
Gilbertsville’s Lindsay Spengler has been on the road to
recovery now for a little more than a month after a difficult
operation to help relieve her RSD, a condition that causes her
extreme pain at all times, restricting her movement. Lindsay
has been bed-ridden for several years because of the pain. She
was scheduled to go to Germany for a rare kind of treatment, but
was then forced to travel to Mexico when the German treatment
was discontinued.
As of the
last week of August, she was put into a coma to prepare her for
an intense procedure that would hopefully relieve much of her
pain and give Lindsay her life back. After years of her family
and friends seeing her suffer, Lindsay has now been introduced
to eating real food again, sitting up, standing, and even
walking. What you are seeing are photos from her website taken
in the hospital in Mexico.
Although
Lindsay has a long way to go and much painful recovery, she has
created a “food mural” of the items she hopes to be capable of
eating in the near future, and is anticipating coming back home
and being her old active self once again. We can’t wait to see
you back in Pennsylvania again Lindsay.
LIBERTY FIRE
MUSTER
A fire
muster was held at the Liberty Fire Company in New Berlinville
and was open to the public to show off some of the latest in
fire fighting equipment and to give some local firefighters the
chance to get together and have some fun.
[RANDY
MINNINGER COMMENT]
Along with
the food and entertainment, tickets being sold for a drawing
were available and benefited the Fallen Firefighters Fund, an
organization dedicated to providing support for families of
firefighters killed on duty.
FARMERS
MARKET
Building a
Better Boyertown has organized a farmer’s market in Boyertown,
allowing local businesses and farmers a chance to meet in one
place to sell their products. The arrival of large chain stores
is a problem for local retailers, and the farmer’s market gives
those retailers and easy passage to reach the community.
[COMMENT]
The market
was so successful on its first day, that some even sold out of
their products.
[COMMENT]
The farmers
market is held at the parking lot near the Boyertown Museum of
Historic Vehicles and will continue to be held every Sunday from
10 till 2 until November 2nd.
BEARS DEN
RESTAURANT
A hidden
secret in Boyertown? No, just a little hidden from sight. The
new Bears Den restaurant in Boyertown is open for business and
besides its great sandwiches and hoagies, it has a huge display
of Boyertown sports memorabilia to show off. Owners Kelly and
Dennis Frain are Boyertown Sports Fanatics and have been
collecting the items for years and are finally able to show off
their hard work to all those who come to share in their food.
On the walls, one can see achievements from the fifties; while
looking at a different portion of the wall, one can see
achievements from as late as the most recent sports seasons.
Probably the
most unique parts in the construction of the interior are the
walls and booths. Integrated into the red and black walls are
wooden panels, original bleachers that were removed from Bears
stadium. One can see the original painted numbers on the wooden
panels, collected by Kelly’s father, and constructed into walls
and booths by Dennis.
A variety of
organizations and sports teams have since donated uniforms and
other retired sports equipment since the opening of the
restaurant. Be sure to check back to the WZAR website for an
expanded story and tour of the restaurant.
RT. 100 CAR
ROLLOVER
WZAR was
first on the scene within minutes after an SUV took a tumble on
route 100 closing down the northbound lanes for a few hours.
The tire tracks seem to show that the SUV went up into the grass
and then rolled onto its side after reaching the pavement. The
situation was dangerous because the accelerator was stuck,
causing the wheels and the drive shaft to continue to spin until
emergency crews disabled the vehicle. Both driver and passenger
walked from the wreck, and directed traffic until authorities
arrived.
DAWN
BIRTHDAY
It was a
special someone’s 50th birthday party this month,
Dawn Haas Rhude, owner of Miracles in Motion Dance Studio and
writer of WZAR’s “In the Spirit of the Performing Arts” webpage
was thrown a surprise party by her friends and family. Guests
were welcomed with a toast, a piece of cake, and a few hours of
sharing memories. Happy birthday, Dawn.
