The new Wal-Mart Supercenter (567 Route 100 N.) held its grand opening on October 26th, 2005.  Wal-Mart has now landed in this community and perhaps may open many more doors and opportunities for people in the area.  The new center has created 325 new jobs for the community and aims on providing charitable support and "everyday low prices."

The 189,055-square-foot building features 36 departments and also includes a bakery, a delicatessen, a frozen food section, and meat, dairy and fresh produce sections.  Other store features include a tire and lube express, a Subway restaurant, a photo studio, a photo lab, a vision center, a pharmacy, a hair salon, and a nail salon.  The store will be open 24 hours, seven days a week.

The Boyertown High School Girl's Choir performed at the grand opening and members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars presented the colors.

More than 1,100 people applied for jobs at the new Super Wal-Mart, but the store will be employing about 325 employees.

At the opening of the store, it was announced that $31,500 was donated through Wal-Mart's Good Works community involvement program.  Organizations included in the donations: American Red Cross, Boyertown High School, the Boyertown Junior Highs, Friendship Hook & Ladder Fire Department, Gilbertsville Fire and Rescue Company, and many more.

WZAR visited the new Wal-Mart on Tuesday, the day before its opening when VIP tours and family member tours were made available.  WZAR spoke to manager John McHugh, who refused to comment and refused to let us record inside the building.  He was quoted as saying, "We are only friendly to people who are friendly to us."

It will be fun having a new Wal-Mart in our area, but it may lead to some local business damage.  This is definitely helping our local economy by offering jobs, but how will it affect our small, locally owned businesses?  Hopefully with some time business and commerce will be able to balance out without hurting our local heritage too badly.
